Northallerton Dog Week – spoilt fur choice

They say that every dog has their day, well in Northallerton they have made that a whole week as from the 29th July to the 5th August, it’s Northallerton Dog Week, a special celebration of all things canine.

At Joe Cornish Gallery, there are two special doggy inspired exhibitions, the first “Life on a Lead” is a photographic exhibition celebrating the eclectic mix of dogs from the Italian piazzas of Venice.  Kate Somervell’s light hearted images were taken during the winter months when Venetians like to dress their dogs to protect them from the cold.  The photographs capture an engaging cast of canine companions against a backdrop of unpredictable light and weather, shadows and silhouettes amongst the famous Venetian architecture.

Also on show is Emma Stothards’ “Dog Sculptures in Wire and Willow” Emma is a North Yorkshire sculptor, inspired by nature who exhibits nationally and internationally at prestigious sites such as the Chelsea Flower Show and HRH the Prince of Wales Highgrove Estate. Dogs and their owners are welcome at the Gallery which will also feature Café Doggy Treats, Gallery Dog Trail and Dog themed items available in the gallery shop.  Not a dog owner?  Don’t worry as Guide Dog for the Blind and National Animal Sanctuary Support will be in residence with people friendly dogs.

Northallerton BID Manager Julia Chance said “There are lots of places you can shop in Northallerton with your dog and we want our visitors to know that in Northallerton, dog owners don’t need to leave their dog outside or at home to come for a day’s shopping or to meet friends for coffee.  There are many businesses who welcome dogs and their owners, if in doubt, just ask or check out our website for more information”

Adam from Joe Cornish Gallery said “The Gallery has always been a dog-friendly venue but we are often struck by how surprised and delighted owners are when they find this out.  We felt that a Dog Week was a great way to advertise our dog friendly approach and we know that this extends to other stores in Northallerton.”

To mark the inaugural Dog Week in Northallerton, North Yorkshire’s most vibrant market town, Northallerton BID are also releasing a Dog Friendly Shopping Map in print and online.  The map which is available free from the Tourist office and High Street Retailers will show all the places you can take your dog to shop, eat, play and stay in the County Town, including all the sites your furry friend can have a drink or a treat all year round.

Plus we are also launching a doggy follow me competition on Facebook and Twitter, where people can follow the BID and share a photo of their perfect pooch for the chance of winning a special dog related prize!

800 runners will race in Northallerton 10K

Northallerton 10KTHE county town of North Yorkshire is hosting its second 10km run on May 28th – and organisers have been overwhelmed by the response.

The Northallerton 10K will start and finish on the High Street and follows the huge success of last year when some 500 people took part.

Race organiser Thomas Kerfoot said all 800 places have already been sold  – bringing them closer to their objective of 1,000 entrants within the next three years.

The scenic yet challenging course takes runners out of the town centre, into the countryside and then back for a big finish on the High Street.

Local businesses have got behind the event with an extensive list of sponsors backing the race, with Simon Bailes Peugeot as headline sponsor.

All entrance fees and proceeds will go to Pendragon Community Trust, a Northallerton-based charity that recently opened its doors to a multi-sensory centre catering to a wide range of disabilities.
